Alemdar Mustafa Pasha

Alemdar Mustafa Pasha, born in 1755, emerged from a Janissary family, possibly in Rusçuk, present-day Ruse, Bulgaria. His early military career began during the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774, where he earned the title bayraktar, or 'flag-bearer', reflecting his rank within the Janissary corps. Following the war, he transitioned from the corps to become a notable military commander in Rumelia, gaining significant influence.

As a staunch supporter of Sultan Selim III's reform initiatives, Alemdar Mustafa Pasha became a pivotal figure in the political landscape of the Ottoman Empire. After the deposition of Selim in 1807, he emerged as a leader for those opposing the new regime. In July 1808, he orchestrated a military coup that resulted in the replacement of Sultan Mustafa IV with Mahmud II, subsequently assuming the role of grand vizier.

Shortly after seizing power, Alemdar Mustafa Pasha established a dictatorship, positioning the Sultan as a mere figurehead. His vision included reviving Selim's reform program to modernize the Ottoman army and align it with European advancements, aiming to mitigate the humiliation from recent military defeats in the Balkans. However, his tenure was tragically cut short when he was killed just months later during a rebellion by the Janissaries.

Despite his brief rule, Alemdar Mustafa Pasha is remembered as a pioneering figure who recognized the necessity for a modern military. His efforts were instrumental in initiating the French military mission in 1796, marking a significant step towards modernization within the Ottoman Empire.
