Alena Arzamasskaia

Alena Arzamasskaia, a remarkable figure in the tumultuous era of the seventeenth century, was born into a peasant family in the Vyezdnaya sloboda of Arzamas. Her early life was marked by devotion as she became an elderly nun, known as a 'старица', embodying the spiritual resilience of her community.

However, the revolt of 1670 in southern Russia ignited a fierce spirit within her. Unlike the legendary Joan of Arc, who fought for her king, Alena took a bold stand against her czar. She emerged as an Erzyan female ataman, leading a detachment of approximately six hundred men under the charismatic leadership of Stepan Razin.

Alena's military prowess was evident during the capture of Temnikov in 1670, where her strategic acumen and courage shone brightly. Her commitment to the cause of rebellion against oppression was unwavering, and she became a symbol of resistance for her people.

Tragically, her journey ended in martyrdom when she was captured and burned at the stake, a testament to her unwavering dedication to her beliefs and her people. Alena Arzamasskaia remains a powerful figure in the annals of history, representing the struggle for justice and freedom.
