Alex Decoteau

Alexander Wuttunee Decoteau, born on November 19, 1887, was a remarkable Cree Canadian athlete whose legacy extends beyond the track. As a member of the Red Pheasant First Nation, he broke barriers in law enforcement by becoming the first Indigenous police officer in Canada when he joined the Edmonton Police in 1911.

Decoteau's prowess in athletics was evident as he excelled in long-distance running, setting numerous records across Western Canada. His dedication to the sport culminated in his representation of Canada at the 1912 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the 5,000 meters event, showcasing his exceptional talent on an international stage.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Decoteau answered the call of duty by enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in April 1915. His commitment to his country ultimately led him to the battlefields of World War I, where he tragically lost his life on October 30, 1917, during the Second Battle of Passchendaele.
