Alexander Belov

Alexander Alexandrovich Belov, affectionately known as Sasha Belov, was born on November 9, 1951, and became a prominent figure in the world of basketball. He played as a center and is best remembered for his remarkable performance during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games, where he scored the game-winning basket that secured the gold medal for the Soviet national team.

Belov's career was marked by his exceptional skills on the court, which earned him recognition as one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991. His contributions to the sport did not go unnoticed, as he was later enshrined into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007, solidifying his legacy in basketball history.

Tragically, Belov's life was cut short when he passed away at the young age of twenty-six on October 3, 1978, due to cardiac sarcoma, a form of cancer. Despite his brief career, his impact on basketball remains significant, and in 2018, he was honored as one of the 101 Greats of European Basketball.
