Alexander Cowan

Alexander Cowan, born on June seventeenth, seventeen seventy-five, was a notable Scottish papermaker and philanthropist. As the thirteenth child and third surviving son of Charles Cowan and Marjory Cowan, he was raised in a family deeply rooted in the paper industry. His familial connections extended to prominent figures, including his cousin and friend, Thomas Chalmers, a well-known Scottish minister.

Throughout his career, Alexander forged significant relationships within the literary and publishing world. He became friends with the publisher Archibald Constable, which led to his association with the illustrious Sir Walter Scott. The Cowan family owned the expansive Valleyfield paper-works located in Penicuik, Midlothian, a business that played a crucial role in the local economy and culture.

In the literary realm, Sir Walter Scott famously referred to Alexander's brother, Duncan, as 'Honest Duncan the Paper Manufacturer' in his work, The Fortunes Of Nigel. This connection highlights the Cowan family's prominence in both the paper industry and Scottish literature. Alexander's business acumen was further demonstrated when he acted as a trustee, assisting Sir Walter Scott during a challenging bankruptcy period.

In eighteen twenty, when the government sold the Valleyfield paper-works back to the Cowan family, Alexander took the helm of the operation. His leadership not only ensured the continuation of the family legacy but also solidified his status as a key figure in the Scottish paper manufacturing industry.
