Alexander Edler, born on April 21, 1986, is a distinguished Swedish former professional ice hockey player who made his mark as a defenceman in the National Hockey League (NHL) over a remarkable seventeen-season career. He began his journey in Sweden's third-tier ice hockey league before being drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round, 91st overall, during the 2004 NHL entry draft. Edler honed his skills playing junior ice hockey with Modo Hockey in the J20 SuperElit and the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League (WHL).
Edler transitioned to professional hockey in North America with the Canucks' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, during the 2006–07 season. His talent quickly shone through, and he became a full-time member of the Canucks the following year. Over his tenure, he earned a spot in the NHL All-Star Game in 2012 and became the longest-tenured player on the Canucks after the retirement of legends Daniel and Henrik Sedin, until his trade to the Los Angeles Kings in 2021.
On the international stage, Edler proudly represented Sweden on four occasions, showcasing his skills at the 2006 World Junior Championships, the 2008 and 2013 IIHF World Championships—where he contributed to a gold medal victory—and the 2014 Winter Olympics, where he helped secure a silver medal. Known for his offensive prowess, calm demeanor on the ice, and powerful slapshot, Edler is celebrated as one of the best defencemen in Canucks history, holding franchise records for the most goals and points scored by a defenceman.
