Alexander of Hales

Alexander of Hales, also known as Halensis, Alensis, or Halesius, was born around the year 1185 and passed away on August twenty-first, 1245. A prominent Franciscan friar, he earned the esteemed titles of Doctor Irrefragibilis, or 'Irrefutable Teacher,' and Theologorum Monarcha, meaning 'King of Theologians.' These accolades were bestowed upon him by Pope Alexander IV in the papal bull De Fontibus Paradisi.

As a philosopher and theologian, Alexander played a pivotal role in the evolution of scholasticism, a method of critical thought that dominated medieval universities. His teachings and writings significantly influenced the intellectual landscape of his time, establishing a foundation for future theological discourse.
