Alexander of Judaea

Alexander of Judaea, also known as Alexander II or Alexander Maccabeus, was born in the year negative eighty and was the eldest son of Aristobulus II, the king of Judaea. His lineage traces back to a prominent dynasty, as he was the grandson of Alexander Jannaeus, a significant figure in the history of the Jewish kingdom.

In a union that intertwined familial ties and political alliances, Alexander married his cousin, Alexandra Maccabeus, who was the daughter of his uncle, Hyrcanus II. This marriage not only solidified their family's influence but also linked them to the broader narrative of Judaean royalty.

Alexander's legacy continued through his daughter, Mariamne, who became the second wife of Herod the Great, further intertwining the fates of these powerful families in the region. His life, marked by the complexities of royal lineage and the tumultuous history of Judaea, ended around forty-nine BCE.
