Alexander Parvus

Alexander Israel Helphand, more widely recognized as Alexander Parvus, was born on August 27, 1867. A Russian-born Marxist theorist, journalist, and activist, he emerged as a significant figure within the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). His intellectual contributions and revolutionary activities positioned him as a notable player in the political landscape of his time.

Parvus is particularly remembered for his collaboration with Leon Trotsky in the early development of the theory of permanent revolution around the year nineteen hundred and five. His controversial role during World War I involved devising a plan to destabilize the Russian Empire by inciting internal revolution, a strategy he presented to the German government. With their financial backing, he established a network to support the Bolsheviks, playing a crucial role in facilitating Vladimir Lenin's return to Russia from exile in the infamous 'sealed train' in April nineteen seventeen.

Following the Bolshevik seizure of power in Petrograd in November nineteen seventeen, Parvus sought to return to Russia but was rebuffed by Lenin, who deemed his hands too 'dirty' for the cause of the revolution. Remaining in Germany, Parvus transitioned into a wealthy industrialist and served as a political advisor to the early leaders of the Weimar Republic. His life was marked by stark contrasts, oscillating between revolutionary fervor, significant intellectual contributions to Marxism, and later affluence and political maneuvering.
