Alexander Pechersky

Alexander "Sasha" Aronovich Pechersky was born on 22 February 1909 and became a prominent Jewish-Soviet military officer. He is best known for his pivotal role in organizing and leading the most successful uprising and mass escape of Jews from the Sobibor extermination camp during World War II, an event that took place on 14 October 1943.

Following the war, Pechersky faced significant challenges under the Soviet regime. In 1948, he was arrested alongside his brother during the Rootless cosmopolitan campaign, which targeted Jews suspected of having pro-Western sentiments. However, due to increasing international pressure, he was released.

Despite his heroic actions, Pechersky was repeatedly denied permission by the Soviet government to leave the country to testify in international trials related to the Sobibor uprising, including the notable Eichmann Trial in Israel. His testimony was only permitted under the watchful eye of the KGB, reflecting the tense political climate of the time.

In 1987, he faced yet another refusal to exit the country for a trial in Poland, underscoring the ongoing restrictions placed upon him. Alexander Pechersky's legacy as a courageous leader and survivor remains a significant part of Holocaust history.
