Alexander Roberts Dunn

Alexander Roberts Dunn, born on September fifteenth, eighteen thirty-three, holds a distinguished place in Canadian military history as the first Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross. This prestigious award is recognized as the highest honor for bravery in the face of the enemy, bestowed upon members of British and Commonwealth forces. Dunn's valor and commitment to duty set a remarkable precedent for future generations of Canadian soldiers.

In addition to his heroic achievements, Dunn played a pivotal role in the formation of a regiment in Canada for the British Army. His leadership and dedication culminated in him becoming the first Canadian to command a British Army regiment, a significant milestone that underscored his influence and legacy within the military community.

Tragically, Dunn's life was cut short under mysterious circumstances when he succumbed to a gunshot wound in Abyssinia, now known as Eritrea. At the time, he was participating in the British Expedition to Abyssinia, a mission that would ultimately claim his life. His contributions and sacrifices have not been forgotten, as evidenced by the rediscovery of his grave by Canadian Armed Forces troops during their peacekeeping efforts in the Eritrean–Ethiopian War of two thousand to two thousand one.
