Alexander Selkirk

Alexander Selkirk, born in 1676, was a Scottish sailor whose adventurous spirit led him to become a privateer and Royal Navy officer. His life took a dramatic turn when he found himself marooned on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean for four years and four months, a fate he initially requested due to concerns about the seaworthiness of his ship, the Cinque Ports.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, Selkirk joined buccaneering voyages, one of which was under the command of Captain Thomas Stradling, with the renowned William Dampier overseeing the expedition. The ship made a stop at the Juan Fernández Islands for resupply, where Selkirk's instincts prompted him to ask to be left behind, a decision that would ultimately save his life.

His foresight proved correct when the Cinque Ports foundered near Malpelo Island, far from the coast of present-day Colombia. Stranded alone, Selkirk adapted to his harsh surroundings, honing his skills in hunting and resourcefulness, which would later become the cornerstone of his survival story.

Rescued by the privateer Woodes Rogers, who was accompanied by Dampier, Selkirk's tale of endurance and survival captured the public's imagination. His experiences on the island inspired the character of Robinson Crusoe in Daniel Defoe's famous novel, cementing his legacy as a symbol of resilience and adventure.
