Alexander Stubb, born on April first, nineteen sixty-eight, is a prominent Finnish politician who has recently taken office as the President of Finland in March twenty twenty-four. A member of the National Coalition Party, Stubb has had a distinguished political career, previously serving as the Prime Minister of Finland from two thousand fourteen to two thousand fifteen and holding various senior ministerial roles since two thousand eight.
Stubb's political journey began as a researcher specializing in the European Union, which paved the way for his election to the European Parliament in two thousand four. He was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in two thousand eight and later became the Minister for European Affairs and Trade in the Cabinet of Jyrki Katainen after being elected to the Parliament of Finland in two thousand eleven.
In two thousand fourteen, he succeeded Katainen as the leader of the National Coalition Party and was appointed Prime Minister by President Sauli Niinistö, leading a five-party coalition government. Following the parliamentary elections in two thousand fifteen, where his party faced a setback, Stubb transitioned to serve as Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Juha Sipilä. After losing the party leadership to Petteri Orpo in June two thousand sixteen, he resigned from parliament in two thousand seventeen to take on the role of vice-president at the European Investment Bank.
Stubb's academic pursuits continued as he served as director and professor at the European University Institute’s School of Transnational Governance until twenty twenty-three. In that year, he announced his candidacy for the Finnish presidential election, ultimately winning the second round with fifty-one point six percent of the vote against former foreign minister Pekka Haavisto, making history as the second Finland-Swedish president and the first elected to the office.
