Alexandru Todea, born on June fifth, nineteen twelve, emerged from humble beginnings as the thirteenth of sixteen children in a peasant family. His early education began in his native village, followed by high school in Reghin and Blaj. Recognizing his potential, Metropolitan Bishop Vasile Suciu encouraged him to pursue theological studies in Rome, where he ultimately earned his doctorate from the Pontificio Collegio Urbano de Propaganda Fide before returning to Romania in nineteen forty.
Throughout his life, Todea dedicated himself to the Greek-Catholic Church, serving as a bishop of the Alba Iulia Diocese. His commitment to his faith and community was unwavering, even as he faced the harsh realities of the communist regime. Todea became a victim of political persecution, enduring suffering in notorious prisons such as Jilava, Sighet, and Pitești.
In recognition of his service and dedication, Todea was elevated to the rank of cardinal on June twenty-eighth, nineteen ninety-one, receiving the titular church of Sant'Atanasio a Via Tiburtina. His legacy continues to resonate within the church and the community he served.
Alexandru Todea passed away and is interred at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Blaj, a testament to his lifelong commitment to his faith and the people of Romania.
