Alèxia Putellas i Segura, known simply as Alexia, is a prominent Spanish professional footballer born on February 4, 1994, in Catalonia. As a midfielder and forward, she has made a significant impact in women's football, currently captaining the Liga F club Barcelona and representing the Spain women's national team. Her journey began at CE Sabadell, progressing through Barcelona's youth system before making her mark at Espanyol and Levante.
Returning to Barcelona in 2012, Putellas has since amassed an impressive collection of accolades, including eight league titles, eight Copas de la Reina, and three UEFA Women's Champions League trophies. Her pivotal role in the 2020–21 season helped Barcelona achieve their first Champions League title and a historic continental treble. In recognition of her outstanding performances, she was awarded the UEFA Women's Player of the Year, the Ballon d'Or Féminin, and The Best FIFA Women's Player in 2021, making history as the first player to win all three awards in a single year.
Despite facing challenges, including an ACL injury that sidelined her during the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, Putellas continued to shine, winning the same trio of prestigious awards in 2022, becoming the first woman to achieve this feat consecutively. Her contributions to Barcelona led the team to another league and Champions League victory in 2022–23, and they completed a continental quadruple in 2023–24.
On the international stage, Putellas has been a key player for Spain, achieving success with youth teams and making her senior debut in 2013. She has participated in multiple major tournaments, including the FIFA Women's World Cup and UEFA Women's Euro, and captained Spain to victory in the 2023–24 UEFA Women's Nations League. As of October 2023, she holds the record for the most appearances for Spain and is Barcelona's all-time top goalscorer.
