Alexios III Angelos

Born in the year one thousand one hundred fifty-three, Alexios III Angelos emerged from the extended imperial family, closely associated with the Komnenos dynasty through cognatic descent. His ascent to the throne was marked by a dramatic power struggle, as he deposed, blinded, and imprisoned his younger brother, Isaac II Angelos, to claim the imperial crown.

During his reign, which was overshadowed by the tumultuous events of the Fourth Crusade, Alexios III faced significant challenges. The crusaders attacked Constantinople in the year twelve hundred three, ostensibly to support Alexios IV Angelos. In a critical moment, Alexios III took charge of the city's defense, a task he mismanaged, leading to dire consequences.

In the chaos that ensued, Alexios III fled the city under the cover of night, accompanied by one of his three daughters. His attempts to regroup and rally support from Adrianople and Mosynopolis were ultimately unsuccessful, culminating in his capture by Marquis Boniface I of Montferrat.

After being ransomed, Alexios III was sent to Asia Minor, where he plotted against his son-in-law, Theodore I Laskaris. However, his fate was sealed as he was eventually captured again and spent his final days confined to the Monastery of Hyakinthos in Nicaea, where he passed away.
