Alfonsina Orsini

Alfonsina Orsini, born in 1472, emerged as a significant political figure in the Republic of Florence. As a regent, she governed during the absences of her son, Lorenzo II de' Medici, from 1515 to 1519. Her leadership was often viewed with trepidation, as it was perceived as a harbinger of the decline of republican governance in Florence.

Hailing from a noble lineage and raised within the royal court of Naples, Alfonsina's marriage to Piero di Lorenzo de' Medici in 1488 solidified her ties to one of the most influential families in Italy. She was not only the mother of Lorenzo II but also had two daughters, further intertwining her family's legacy with the Medici name.

Throughout her life, Alfonsina played a pivotal role in restoring the Medici family's power after their exile. She was instrumental in securing a French royal marriage for her son and wielded considerable influence at the court of Pope Leo X, who was her brother-in-law.
