Alfonso II of Asturias

Alfonso II of Asturias, known as el Casto, was a significant ruler whose reign spanned from the year seven hundred eighty-three and then from seven hundred ninety-one until his death in eight hundred forty-two. His leadership marked a pivotal era in the history of Asturias, characterized by both political challenges and remarkable achievements.

Born around the year seven hundred sixty, Alfonso was the son of Fruela I and Munia, a Basque woman who was captured during a military campaign. His lineage and early life set the stage for his future as a king who would navigate the complexities of leadership in a time of great change.

One of Alfonso's most notable accomplishments was the discovery of the supposed tomb of St. James the Great in the town of Compostela. This event not only solidified his legacy but also led to the establishment of Santiago de Compostela, a city that would become a significant pilgrimage site in the Christian world.

Alfonso's reign lasted for an impressive fifty-one years, during which he faced various challenges, including an attempted usurpation of the crown by a family member named Nepotian after his death.
