Alfonso, Prince of Asturias, born on 10 May 1907, was the first in line to the Spanish throne from the moment of his birth until the monarchy's abolition in 1931. He was the eldest son of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, a lineage that carried the weight of royal expectations.
In a bold move that stirred public debate, Alfonso renounced his rights to the throne in 1933 to marry Edelmira Sampedro, a Cuban commoner. This decision echoed a similar abdication that would occur in Britain just a few years later, when his second cousin Edward VIII chose love over duty, stepping down to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee.
Tragically, Alfonso's life was cut short at the age of thirty-one due to a car accident. Although he initially appeared to have only minor injuries, his inherited condition of haemophilia, passed down from his great-grandmother Queen Victoria, led to fatal internal bleeding, ultimately claiming his life on 6 September 1938.
