Alfred Augustus Stockton

Alfred Augustus Stockton, born on November 2, 1842, in Studholm, New Brunswick, was a distinguished Canadian lawyer, professor, politician, and writer. He was the son of William Augustus Wiggins Stockton and Sarah Oldfield. His academic journey began at Mount Allison Wesleyan Academy, where he earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree in 1867.

Stockton's legal education culminated in a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1869 from Victoria University in Cobourg, Ontario, now part of the University of Toronto. He was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1868, marking the beginning of a notable legal career. In 1883, he furthered his academic credentials by obtaining a Ph.D. from Illinois Wesleyan University through examination and dissertation.

His political career spanned from 1883 to 1899, during which he served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, representing Saint John County until 1892 and then Saint John City until 1899. Notably, he held the position of Leader of the Opposition from 1892 to 1899, showcasing his influence in provincial politics.

In the 1904 federal election, Stockton was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the City and County of St. John as a member of the Conservative Party. His tenure in federal politics continued until his passing on March 15, 1907, leaving behind a legacy of public service and dedication to his community.
