Alfred Hrdlicka

Alfred Hrdlicka, born on February twenty-seventh, nineteen twenty-eight, in Vienna, emerged as a prominent figure in the world of art, excelling as a sculptor, painter, and professor. His early life was shaped by his family's Czech communist and trade unionist background, which influenced his artistic vision. Hrdlicka began his journey in the arts by training as a dental technician from nineteen forty-three to nineteen forty-five, before pursuing painting at the Akademie der bildenden Künste under the tutelage of renowned artists Albert Paris Gütersloh and Josef Dobrowsky until nineteen fifty-two.

Following his studies in painting, Hrdlicka dedicated himself to sculpture, learning under the guidance of Fritz Wotruba until nineteen fifty-seven. His artistic career took a significant turn in nineteen sixty when he held his first exhibition in Vienna. By nineteen sixty-four, he gained international recognition as Austria's representative at the prestigious Venice Biennale in Italy, marking a pivotal moment in his career.

In two thousand eight, Hrdlicka's provocative religious work, 'Religion, Flesh and Power,' which explored themes surrounding the Apostles, sparked controversy due to its homoerotic undertones. This exhibition was showcased in the museum of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, further solidifying his reputation as a daring and innovative artist. Throughout his career, Hrdlicka also dedicated time to teaching, mentoring many aspiring sculptors, including Hans Sailer and Angela Laich, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of artists.
