Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Alfredo Stroessner

Alfredo Stroessner, born on November third, nineteen twelve, was a prominent Paraguayan politician and military officer who became the nation's military dictator. He ruled as the forty-second president of Paraguay from August fifteenth, nineteen fifty-four, until his overthrow in nineteen eighty-nine. Known as El Stronato, his regime was characterized by political violence and repression.

Stroessner's rise to power began with a coup d'état on May fourth, nineteen fifty-four, supported by the Colorado Party and the Paraguayan Army. Following a brief provisional government led by Tomás Romero Pereira, he was elected unopposed in the presidential election later that year, as all opposition parties had been banned since nineteen forty-seven.

Upon taking office, Stroessner swiftly suspended constitutional and civil rights, establishing an authoritarian regime backed by the military and secret police. His rule was marked by violent political repression, particularly against opponents, although some parties were nominally legalized in nineteen sixty-two. From nineteen fifty-eight to nineteen eighty-eight, he maintained his grip on power through electoral fraud.

The Constitution of nineteen sixty-seven, introduced on August twenty-fifth, allowed for his re-election, while amendments in nineteen seventy-seven effectively enabled his indefinite rule. However, his reign came to an end when his trusted confidant, Lieutenant General Andrés Rodríguez Pedotti, orchestrated a coup d'état on February second and third, nineteen eighty-nine. Stroessner was exiled to Brazil on February fifth, where he passed away on August sixteenth, two thousand six, leaving behind a complex legacy in Paraguay.
