Ali Akbar Khan

Ali Akbar Khan, born on April 14, 1922, was a distinguished Indian Hindustani classical musician renowned for his exceptional skill in playing the sarod. He was a pivotal figure in the Maihar gharana, where he honed his craft under the tutelage of his father, Allauddin Khan. Throughout his illustrious career, Khan composed a multitude of classical ragas and film scores, showcasing his deep understanding of music.

In 1956, he established a music school in Calcutta, which later evolved into the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967. This institution eventually relocated with him to the United States, where it is currently situated in San Rafael, California, with an additional branch in Basel, Switzerland. Khan's dedication to music education has left a lasting impact on countless students and musicians.

Khan played a crucial role in introducing Indian classical music to Western audiences, both as a performer and educator. His journey to America began in 1955 when he was invited by the renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin. He later settled in California, where he also served as an adjunct professor of music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Khan was awarded India's second highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan, in 1989. He was nominated five times for the Grammy Award and was honored with the MacArthur Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship, solidifying his legacy as a master musician.
