Ali Babacan, born on April 4, 1967, is a prominent Turkish politician, economist, and engineer. He is best known as the founder and current leader of the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA). His political career spans over a decade, during which he held several key positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economy, Chief Negotiator for the EU, and Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey from 2002 to 2015.
Babacan began his political journey as the Minister of State responsible for economic affairs in the 58th cabinet under the Justice and Development Party (AKP). He maintained this role throughout the 58th and 59th Governments of the Republic of Turkey. His appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs in August two thousand and seven marked a significant milestone in his career, further solidifying his influence in Turkish politics.
From two thousand and nine to two thousand fifteen, he served as the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic and Financial Affairs, where he was instrumental in implementing a rigorous economic reform program supported by substantial International Monetary Fund loans. Under his stewardship, the Turkish economy experienced a remarkable recovery following two severe crises, showcasing his technocratic approach to governance.
In two thousand nineteen, Babacan departed from the AKP, citing profound differences regarding the party's direction. This pivotal moment led to the establishment of the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA) in two thousand twenty, which later aligned with the Nation Alliance, positioning itself as an opposition force against the AKP and President Erdoğan.
