Alice of Antioch

Alice of Antioch, born in the year one thousand one hundred and ten, was a prominent political figure in the medieval landscape of the Crusader states. As the daughter of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem, she became the princess of Antioch from one thousand one hundred twenty-six to one thousand one hundred thirty, a period marked by her ambitious pursuit of power.

Upon the arrival of her husband, Bohemond II, in one thousand one hundred twenty-six, Alice's life took a significant turn. Their union produced a daughter, Constance, but tragedy struck when Bohemond died in battle in one thousand one hundred thirty. Following his death, Alice sought to assert her authority, either as regent for her daughter or as the sovereign princess herself.

Her quest for power was met with resistance from her father, who passed away in one thousand one hundred thirty-one, and her brother-in-law, King Fulk of Jerusalem. Despite these challenges, Alice managed to assume control in Constance's name by late one thousand one hundred thirty-five. However, her reign was short-lived, as she was ultimately displaced in early one thousand one hundred thirty-six by Raymond of Poitiers, who had come to marry her daughter.

Throughout her widowhood, Alice maintained her influence over the coastal cities of Latakia and Jabala, territories granted to her as dower by Bohemond. In these regions, she cultivated an autonomous lordship, showcasing her resilience and political acumen in a male-dominated society.
