Alicia Killaly

Alicia Killaly, born in 1836 in London, Upper Canada, was a talented Canadian watercolour painter known for her captivating depictions of outdoor scenes. Throughout the 1840s and 1850s, she resided in Quebec City, Montreal, and Toronto, where she honed her artistic skills and developed a unique style that captured the beauty of the Canadian landscape.

In 1871, Alicia married Christopher Hatton Turnor, a former British soldier, and relocated to England. Despite her move, her artistic legacy continued to resonate through her works, which often featured serene canoe trips, frozen rivers, and the majestic Niagara Falls. It is believed that she may have studied under the renowned artist Cornelius Krieghoff, further influencing her artistic journey.

One of her notable works, titled Quebec From Across the St. Lawrence, created around 1867, is part of the esteemed collection at the Royal Ontario Museum. Additionally, an 1868 series of chromolithographs, A Picnic at Montmorency, showcases her humorous take on winter picnics and stands as her only known commercial venture. Copies of these lithographs are preserved in several prestigious institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada and the McCord Museum of Canadian History.

Despite her promising career, Alicia Killaly is not known to have produced any artworks after her marriage. She passed away in 1908 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts today.
