Alicia Molik, born on January 27, 1981, is a distinguished former professional tennis player from Australia. She achieved remarkable success during her career, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 8 and a doubles ranking of world No. 6. Her tenacity and skill on the court earned her a bronze medal in singles at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where she notably upset the reigning French Open champion, Anastasia Myskina.
In addition to her Olympic success, Molik triumphed at the 2004 Zurich Open, defeating the formidable Maria Sharapova in the final. She also made a significant mark at the 2005 Australian Open, reaching the quarterfinals. Her prowess in doubles was highlighted by her Grand Slam victories, winning the 2005 Australian Open alongside Svetlana Kuznetsova and the 2007 French Open with Mara Santangelo. Furthermore, she reached the finals of three mixed doubles major tournaments, showcasing her versatility and competitive spirit.
However, Molik's career faced challenges when she contracted an inner-ear infection shortly after the 2005 Australian Open, which developed into vestibular neuronitis. This condition sidelined her from competition until May 2006, and although she made a comeback, she struggled to regain her previous singles form, eventually returning to the top sixty a year later.
After retiring in August 2008, Molik made a return to the sport in September 2009. Her final match took place at the 2011 Australian Open, where she faced Nadia Petrova in the second round. Today, she continues to contribute to the tennis community as the captain of the Cottesloe Tennis Club in the Tennis West Women's State League competition.
