Allan Brooks

Allan Brooks, born on February fifteenth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a distinguished ornithologist and bird artist who made significant contributions to the field of avian illustration in Canada. Growing up in a farming household, he faced challenges in pursuing his passion for bird art, especially compared to his contemporary, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, who thrived in the United States.

Brooks was deeply influenced by his father, William Edwin Brooks, a dedicated ornithologist in India. This familial connection to ornithology sparked Allan's interest, yet his rural upbringing in Canada posed obstacles that shaped his unique artistic journey.

His painting style was characterized by an impressionistic approach, focusing more on the habitat of birds rather than the intricate details of their plumage. This distinctive perspective allowed him to capture the essence of avian life in a way that resonated with viewers.

Following the tragic death of Fuertes in a road accident, Brooks was entrusted with the important task of completing the plates for the esteemed publication, Birds of Massachusetts. This commission not only highlighted his talent but also solidified his place in the world of ornithological art.
