Allen G. Thurman

Allen G. Thurman was a prominent American politician, lawyer, and judge, born on November thirteenth, eighteen thirteen, in Lynchburg, Virginia. His family relocated to Chillicothe, Ohio, during his youth, where he established a legal practice alongside his uncle, William Allen, a future U.S. Senator. Thurman's political career began when he was elected to the House of Representatives in eighteen forty-four, making him the youngest member of that body at the time.

During his tenure in the House, Thurman supported President James K. Polk's administration during the Mexican–American War and voted in favor of the Wilmot Proviso, which sought to prohibit slavery in territories acquired from Mexico. After serving a single term, he transitioned to the Ohio Supreme Court, where he continued to influence state politics. In eighteen sixty-seven, he narrowly lost the gubernatorial election to Rutherford B. Hayes, but his political journey was far from over.

In eighteen sixty-nine, Thurman was elected to the United States Senate, where he became a vocal opponent of the Republican Reconstruction policies. His stance included campaigning against African-American voting rights and attempting to reverse the civil rights advancements made during that era.
