Alonso de Ojeda

Alonso de Ojeda, born in 1466, was a prominent Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador whose adventures significantly shaped the early exploration of South America. He is best known for his expeditions that led to the naming of Venezuela, a land he explored during his initial journeys.

Ojeda's explorations were not limited to Venezuela; he was the first European to set foot in several regions, including Guyana, Curaçao, and parts of Colombia, particularly La Guajira. His travels also took him to the shores of Lake Maracaibo, where he made notable discoveries that contributed to the European understanding of the region.

In addition to his explorations, Ojeda founded Santa Cruz, known today as La Guairita, further establishing his legacy in the New World. His journeys extended to the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, and Aruba, where he often traveled alongside notable figures such as Amerigo Vespucci and Juan de la Cosa.

As a key figure in the first wave of Spanish conquistadors, Ojeda's contributions to the exploration and colonization of the Americas were significant, marking him as a pivotal character in the history of European expansion in the New World.
