Alonzo C. Babers, born on October 31, 1961, in Montgomery, Alabama, is a distinguished American athlete and military officer. He is celebrated for his remarkable achievements in athletics, particularly for winning two gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he excelled in both the 400 meters and the 4 × 400 meters relay.
Raised as a military dependent, Babers graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School in West Germany before attending the United States Air Force Academy from 1979 to 1983. There, he majored in aerospace engineering while also showcasing his athletic prowess on the track and playing a season of football.
Babers' journey in international athletics was marked by a meteoric rise. By the end of 1982, his best time in the 400 meters was forty-five point nine seconds. However, he made significant strides in 1983, clocking a personal best of forty-five point zero seven seconds. Despite a disappointing sixth place finish in the 4 × 400 meters relay at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, he continued to improve.
In 1984, Babers reached new heights. He won his semi-final at the USA Final Olympic Trials in Los Angeles with a personal best of forty-four point nine five seconds and later qualified for the Olympic team with a final time of forty-four point eight six seconds. At the Olympic Games, he further lowered his personal best to forty-four point two seven seconds, securing the gold medal in the 400 meters. He also contributed to the United States team’s victory in the 4 × 400 meters relay, which won gold in a time of two minutes fifty-seven point ninety-one seconds.
While achieving these athletic milestones, Babers served as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Shortly after his Olympic success, he transitioned to flight training school, marking the end of his competitive athletics career. He served actively in the Air Force from 1983 to 1991 and remains a member of the Air Force Reserves. Following his military service, he became a Boeing 777 captain for United Airlines, showcasing his versatility and commitment to excellence.
