Alonzo Mourning

Alonzo Harding Mourning Jr., born on February 8, 1970, is a celebrated former professional basketball player who has made significant contributions to the sport both on and off the court. Known affectionately as 'Zo', he played primarily as a center during his illustrious fifteen-year career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), with the majority of his time spent with the Miami Heat.

Mourning's basketball journey began at Georgetown University, where his defensive prowess became evident. His tenacity earned him the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award on two occasions, and he was named to the NBA All-Defensive Team twice, showcasing his skills as one of the league's premier defenders.

In a remarkable comeback story, Mourning returned to the game after undergoing a kidney transplant, ultimately leading the Miami Heat to victory in the 2006 NBA Championship. His legacy with the Heat was solidified when, on March 30, 2009, he became the first player in franchise history to have his number retired.

Beyond his playing career, Mourning has continued to impact the sport as the vice president of player programs and development for the Miami Heat since June 2009. His contributions to basketball have been recognized with inductions into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in August 2014, and the FIBA Hall of Fame in August 2019.
