Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception

Saint Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception, born Anna Muttathupadathu on 19 August 1910 in Kudamalur, Kerala, was a remarkable Indian Catholic nun and educator. She holds the distinction of being the first woman of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, as well as the first canonized saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.

Joining the Franciscan Clarist Congregation at a young age, Alphonsa dedicated her life to teaching, primarily at St. Mary's High School in Bharananganam. Despite facing numerous health challenges that often interrupted her tenure, she remained known for her unwavering spiritual devotion and cheerful demeanor, embodying simplicity and a deep commitment to her faith.

Following her death on 28 July 1946, many began to attribute miracles to her intercession, prompting the initiation of her canonization process in 1955. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1986 during his visit to India, and in 2008, Pope Benedict XVI canonized her, solidifying her legacy as the first canonized saint from India.

St. Alphonsa is especially venerated in Kerala, where her tomb in Bharananganam has become a significant pilgrimage site. Her feast day is celebrated annually on 28 July within the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, honoring her enduring impact on the faithful.
