Alphonse Bernier

Alphonse Bernier, born on April seventh, eighteen sixty-one in Lévis, Canada East, was a distinguished figure in the realms of law and politics. He embarked on his academic journey at the Séminaire de Québec, followed by the Collège de Lévis, and ultimately graduated from Université Laval. His legal career commenced when he was admitted to the Quebec Bar in eighteen eighty-three, and he further solidified his expertise by earning a PhD in law from Université Laval in eighteen eighty-seven. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed a King's Counsel in nineteen oh three.

Bernier's professional life was marked by a dual commitment to law and education. He practiced law in Quebec City while also serving as a professor of commercial and maritime law at Université Laval from eighteen eighty-nine until nineteen thirty-four. His influence extended beyond the classroom as he took on the role of mayor of Lévis from nineteen oh seven to nineteen seventeen, showcasing his dedication to public service.

In the political arena, Bernier faced challenges, running unsuccessfully as the Conservative candidate in the provincial elections of eighteen ninety and the federal elections of nineteen hundred. However, his perseverance paid off when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for Lévis in nineteen twelve. Despite subsequent defeats in nineteen sixteen and the nineteen seventeen federal election, his political journey was a testament to his commitment to his community.

From nineteen twenty-one to nineteen forty-two, Bernier served as a judge of the Court of King's Bench, further cementing his legacy in the legal field. He passed away in Lévis, Quebec, in nineteen forty-four, leaving behind a rich legacy that was honored with his burial in the Mont-Marie Cemetery in Lévis.
