Altichiero

Altichiero, born in 1330 near Zevio, emerged as a prominent painter and illuminator during the late medieval period. His artistic journey led him to become a significant figure in the della Scala household in Verona, where he created a remarkable series of frescoes inspired by Flavius Josephus's The Wars of the Jews at the Sala del Podestà around 1364.

His most notable works include the frescoes in the basilica of Sant'Antonio (Il Santo) and the Oratorio di San Giorgio in Padua. Although his reputation faced challenges due to alleged collaborations with fellow Bolognese painter Jacopo Avanzo, thorough research has affirmed Altichiero's authorship of these significant artworks. In fact, he was compensated with seven hundred ninety-two ducats in the summer of 1379 for his work decorating the Cappella di S Felice.

The last known record of Altichiero dates back to September 1384, found in a Paduan archival document. At this time, he was either in Verona or preparing to return there. The esteemed Florentine art historian Giorgio Vasari later contributed to the narrative of Altichiero's life, suggesting that he returned to Verona after his endeavors in Padua.
