Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Alvise Contarini

Alvise Contarini, born on October twenty-fourth, sixteen hundred and one, served as the one hundred sixth Doge of Venice from his election on August twenty-sixth, sixteen seventy-six until his death in sixteen eighty-four. He was the eighth and final member of the illustrious House of Contarini to ascend to this prestigious position, following in the footsteps of his ancestor, Domenico I Contarini, who became Doge in one thousand forty-three.

During Contarini's reign, the Republic of Venice experienced a period of relative peace, a welcome respite as it was still recovering from the significant defeat suffered at the hands of the Ottoman Empire during the Cretan War, which lasted from sixteen forty-five to sixteen sixty-nine. This era allowed for a focus on internal stability and the restoration of the Republic's former glory.

However, as Contarini's time in office drew to a close, tensions with the Ottoman Empire reignited, leading Venice into the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War, commonly referred to as the Morean War, which spanned from sixteen eighty-four to sixteen ninety-nine. This conflict marked a turbulent end to an otherwise tranquil reign, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by the Republic in its quest for dominance in the Mediterranean.
