Amadeo I of Spain

Amadeo I of Spain, born Amedeo Ferdinando Maria di Savoia on May 30, 1845, was an Italian prince who made history as the only king of Spain from the House of Savoy. He was the second son of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy and was primarily known as the Duke of Aosta, a title traditionally held by the second son in the Savoyard dynasty.

His ascension to the Spanish throne came in 1870 when he was elected by the Cortes Generales following the deposition of Isabel II. Amadeo's reign, however, was marked by significant challenges, including rising republican sentiments, Carlist uprisings in the north, and the Cuban independence movement. Despite his efforts, the political climate proved tumultuous.

After three years of navigating these difficulties, Amadeo I abdicated in 1873 and returned to Italy, leading to the establishment of the First Spanish Republic. His brief reign left a lasting impact on Spanish history, as he was a monarch caught in a period of profound change.

In addition to his royal duties, Amadeo I founded the Aosta branch of Italy's royal House of Savoy. This branch, while junior in agnatic descent to the line descended from King Umberto I, holds a significant place in the history of Italian nobility.
