Amantle Montsho

Amantle Montsho, born on July fourth, nineteen eighty-three, is a distinguished former sprinter from Botswana, renowned for her specialization in the 400 metres. She made history as the first woman to represent Botswana at the Olympics, competing in the Summer Games of two thousand four and two thousand eight, where she notably reached the finals in the latter.

Throughout her illustrious career, Montsho showcased her talent on the global stage, participating in the World Championships in Athletics and the IAAF World Indoor Championships. She achieved remarkable success, becoming the World Champion in the 400 m with a personal best time of forty-nine point fifty-six seconds in Daegu, solidifying her status as one of the elite athletes in her discipline.

In addition to her world title, Montsho is a two-time gold medallist at the African Championships in the 400 m and has claimed victory at the two thousand seven All-Africa Games, the two thousand ten IAAF Continental Cup, and the two thousand ten Commonwealth Games. Her triumph at the Commonwealth Games marked a significant milestone, as she became Botswana's first-ever gold medallist at the event.

Despite her achievements, Montsho faced challenges, including a two-year suspension for an anti-doping rule violation after testing positive for methylhexaneamine during the two thousand fourteen Commonwealth Games. Nevertheless, her legacy remains strong, with personal bests of eleven point sixty seconds in the 100 m, twenty-two point eighty-nine seconds in the 200 m, and forty-nine point thirty-three seconds in the 400 m. Currently, she trains at the High Performance Training Centre in Dakar, Senegal, and holds the national record for the 400 m both indoors and outdoors.
