He is a former royal and an esteemed veteran of the Indian Army, having served from nineteen sixty-three to nineteen sixty-six. Singh's lineage traces back to the Phulkian dynasty, as he is the son of Yadavindra Singh, the last Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala.

Throughout his extensive political career, Singh has held various significant positions, including serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Punjab and as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. His leadership capabilities were further recognized when he was appointed as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on three separate occasions.

Singh's tenure as the Chief Minister of Punjab was marked by two notable terms, from two thousand two to two thousand seven and again from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty-one. In addition to his political roles, he has been actively involved in cultural initiatives, currently serving as the chairman of the Punjab Urdu Academy since November twenty-two.
