Amit Shah, born on October 22, 1964, is a prominent Indian politician who has made significant contributions to the political landscape of India. He has been serving as the 32nd Minister of Home Affairs since 2019, making him the longest-serving individual in this role in Indian history. In addition to this, he took on the role of the 1st Minister of Co-operation in July 2021 and is currently the Member of Parliament for Gandhinagar.
Shah's political journey began in earnest when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987, following his involvement with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his college years. His rise to prominence was marked by his tenure as the party's national president from 2014 to 2020, during which he played a crucial role in the BJP's electoral strategies, particularly in Uttar Pradesh during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where the party secured seventy-three out of eighty seats.
His leadership has been instrumental in the BJP's successes across various states, including Maharashtra, Haryana, and Assam, although the party faced challenges in Delhi and Bihar in 2015. Shah's strategic acumen was further highlighted in 2017 when he was credited with victories in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Manipur, despite setbacks in Punjab and other states in subsequent years.
As a key ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah is often regarded as the second most powerful figure in India. His extensive experience includes serving as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and holding various ministerial positions in the Gujarat government from 2002 to 2012. His political career reflects a blend of strategic foresight and a deep commitment to the BJP's vision for India.
