His journey to the top began with his triumph as a junior World Champion, which set the stage for a remarkable career. An's prowess in the lightweight division culminated in his crowning as the world champion in two thousand eighteen. His competitive spirit was evident during a two-year podium streak, highlighted by victories at the prestigious Grand Slam events in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo.

Known for his physical and aggressive fighting style, An is particularly recognized for his versatility, especially in executing the seoi nage technique. His dedication to the sport earned him a bronze medal at the two thousand fifteen World Championships, and he proudly represented South Korea at the two thousand sixteen Olympics, where he was seeded first and ranked fourth in the world.
