Anandi Gopal Joshi, born on March thirty-first, eighteen sixty-five, made history as the first Indian female doctor of western medicine. Alongside Kadambini Ganguly, she broke barriers in a male-dominated field, paving the way for future generations of women in medicine.
Her journey began in Kolkata, where she embarked on a remarkable voyage to New York, accompanied by two female English missionary acquaintances. This significant transition was made possible through the generous support of George Robinson, the Viceroy of India, who funded her education.
In the United States, Anandi Gopal Joshi became the first woman from the erstwhile Bombay presidency of British India to earn a two-year degree in western medicine. Her dedication and perseverance not only earned her a place in history but also inspired countless others to pursue their dreams in the face of adversity.
Known by various names, including Anandibai Joshi and Anandi Gopal Joshi—reflecting her husband's name, Gopalrao—she remains a symbol of courage and determination in the medical field.
