Andor Lilienthal

Andor Lilienthal, born on May 5, 1911, was a distinguished chess player who made significant contributions to the game during his extensive career. He was known for his remarkable ability to compete against some of the greatest minds in chess history, including ten world champions, both male and female.

Throughout his career, Lilienthal achieved notable victories against legendary players such as Emanuel Lasker, José Raúl Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine, Max Euwe, Mikhail Botvinnik, Vasily Smyslov, and Vera Menchik. His skill and strategic prowess on the chessboard earned him a respected place in the annals of chess history.

At the time of his passing on May 8, 2010, Lilienthal was recognized as the oldest living grandmaster, a title he held until it was surpassed by Yuri Averbakh. He was also the last surviving member of the original group of grandmasters who were awarded the title by FIDE in 1950, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of competitive chess.
