Andre Phillips

Andre Phillips, born on September fifth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a distinguished retired American track and field athlete and educator. He is celebrated for his remarkable achievement of winning the gold medal in the 400 meters hurdles at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Throughout his athletic career, Phillips often found himself in the shadow of his idol, Edwin Moses, frequently finishing as a runner-up during Moses' unparalleled winning streak. However, he managed to secure a victory over Moses at the Olympic Games, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Phillips' journey in athletics began at Silver Creek High School in San Jose, California, where he excelled in the 330-yard low hurdles, setting a school record in nineteen seventy-seven. He continued to shine at the University of California, Los Angeles, winning the 400 m hurdles at the NCAA championships in nineteen eighty-one. His competitive spirit led him to the inaugural World Athletics Championships in nineteen eighty-three, where he finished fifth in the 400 m hurdles.

In nineteen eighty-five, Phillips claimed his only US National Championship title in the absence of Moses and also triumphed at the IAAF World Cup. Despite losing to Moses at the Olympic trials in nineteen eighty-eight, Phillips showcased his exceptional talent by winning his heat and semifinal at the Olympics. In the final, he achieved a personal best of forty-seven point nineteen seconds, narrowly defeating Senegal's Amadou Dia Ba by a mere point zero four seconds, solidifying his place as one of the fastest hurdlers in history.

After retiring from competitive athletics, Phillips transitioned into education, serving as a teacher and later as an Assistant Principal at Franklin High School. He currently holds the position of Principal at Stagg High School in Stockton, California. His commitment to education is further exemplified by earning an educational doctorate from Concordia University Irvine. In recognition of his contributions to athletics, Phillips was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in two thousand nine.
