André Pieyre de Mandiargues

André Pieyre de Mandiargues, born on March fourteenth, nineteen oh nine in Paris, was a distinguished French writer whose creative talents spanned multiple genres, including poetry, novels, screenplays, and translation. He became an integral part of the Surrealist movement and formed close relationships with notable artists, including the painter Leonor Fini and his wife, the Italian painter Bona Tibertelli de Pisis, who was related to the metaphysical painter Count Filippo Tibertelli de Pisis.

His literary contributions were significant, with his novel La Marge (1967), translated as The Margin, earning him the prestigious Prix Goncourt. This work was later adapted into a film by Walerian Borowczyk in nineteen seventy-six. Mandiargues' collection of erotic items was also featured in Borowczyk's film Une collection particulière, showcasing the intersection of his literary and visual art influences.

In addition to his fiction, Mandiargues wrote an introduction for Anne Desclos's Story of O and was a signatory of the Manifesto of the 121, reflecting his engagement with contemporary cultural debates. His book Feu de braise, published in nineteen fifty-nine, was later translated into English as Blaze of Embers in nineteen seventy-one by April FitzLyon.

Among his most popular works was The Motorcycle (1963), which inspired the film The Girl on a Motorcycle in nineteen sixty-eight, featuring a young Marianne Faithfull. Mandiargues' friendship with motorcycle journalist Anke-Eve Goldmann likely influenced the character 'Rebecca', as Goldmann was a pioneer in women's motorcycle racing, known for her one-piece leather racing suit designed in collaboration with a German manufacturer.
