André Schembri, born on May twenty-seventh, nineteen eighty-six, is a distinguished Maltese former professional footballer who made his mark as an attacking midfielder and forward. He began his career with local clubs Hibernians and Marsaxlokk, where he played a pivotal role in leading Marsaxlokk to their first league title during the two thousand six to two thousand seven season.
Between the summers of two thousand seven and two thousand nine, Schembri embarked on season-long loans to German lower-tier clubs Eintracht Braunschweig and Carl Zeiss Jena. His journey continued with a challenging six-month stint at Austria Kärnten, after which he found success at Hungarian side Ferencváros, finishing the season as the club's top scorer with seventeen goals across all competitions.
In the summer of two thousand eleven, Schembri joined Olympiacos Volos, but after a few appearances, the club faced demotion due to a match-fixing scandal. He subsequently signed with Panionios and later moved to Cypriot club Omonia, where he became a key player, finishing his second season as the league's second highest goalscorer with seventeen goals. After a brief period with German club FSV Frankfurt, he returned to Omonia in December two thousand fourteen.
With interest from various foreign clubs, Portuguese side Boavista secured Schembri's services. However, a managerial change saw him relegated to a substitute role, prompting his return to Cyprus with Apollon Limassol in the summer of two thousand seventeen. He quickly established himself, scoring four goals in six qualifying matches, helping the club reach the group stages of the UEFA Europa League, and becoming the first Maltese player to score in the proper rounds of a UEFA competition. In August two thousand seventeen, he celebrated his first trophy outside Malta, scoring the winning goal in the Cypriot Super Cup.
On the international stage, Schembri represented Malta at youth levels before making his senior debut on June fourth, two thousand six, against Japan. He notably scored twice in Malta's historic two to one victory over Hungary, marking the nation's first competitive win in thirteen years. Regarded as one of Malta's finest football exports, he earned ninety-four caps for the national team, ranking eighth in appearances at the time of his retirement in October two thousand eighteen.
