She made two bids for the leadership of the Conservative Party, first in two thousand sixteen and again in two thousand nineteen, where she finished eighth in the initial voting round.
After resigning from her cabinet position in protest of May's Brexit strategy in May two thousand nineteen, Leadsom continued to serve in the House of Commons. In two thousand twenty-three, she returned to the frontbench as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health, Start for Life, and Primary Care under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. However, she chose not to seek re-election in the two thousand twenty-four general election.
