Andreas Capellanus

Andreas Capellanus, also known as Andrew the Chaplain, was a notable philosopher and writer of the twelfth century, with his life believed to have flourished around the year one thousand one hundred eighty-five. His name, derived from the Latin term 'Capellanus,' translates to 'chaplain,' hinting at his possible ecclesiastical connections.

He is best remembered for his influential treatise, commonly referred to as De amore, or 'About Love.' This work, often misleadingly titled The Art of Courtly Love in English, presents a realistic and somewhat cynical perspective on the concept of courtly love, suggesting that it serves as an antidote to the romantic ideals of the time.

While little is known about his personal life, it is presumed that Capellanus was a courtier in the court of Marie de Champagne, indicating his likely French origins.
