Andreas Scholl

Andreas Scholl, born on November tenth, nineteen sixty-seven, is a distinguished German countertenor renowned for his exceptional talent in the alto vocal range, particularly within the realm of Baroque music. His musical journey began at the tender age of seven when he joined the Kiedricher Chorbuben boys choir, a pivotal step that would shape his illustrious career.

At thirteen, Scholl's remarkable voice earned him a solo opportunity at a Mass in Rome, selected from a staggering twenty thousand choristers worldwide. This early recognition led to his acceptance into the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis at just seventeen, an institution typically reserved for post-graduate students. His dedication and skill eventually saw him succeed his own mentor, Richard Levitt, as an instructor at the same institution.

Scholl's operatic career took off in nineteen ninety-three when he made a sensational debut at the Théâtre Grévin in Paris, stepping in for René Jacobs. His major breakthrough came in nineteen ninety-eight at Glyndebourne, where he portrayed Bertarido in Handel's Rodelinda, a role he later reprised at the Metropolitan Opera in two thousand six. These performances were particularly significant as they were originally written for the celebrated 18th-century alto castrato, Senesino.

Throughout his career, Scholl has collaborated with leading contemporary Baroque specialists, including William Christie and Philippe Herreweghe. His extensive recording career, primarily with Harmonia Mundi and Decca, has produced numerous best-selling CDs. In addition to his singing, Scholl is also a talented songwriter and composer, creating music for ballet and theatre, and operates his own professional sound studio.

Since October two thousand nineteen, Scholl has held the position of professor at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, marking a significant chapter in his teaching career.
