Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Andrei Sannikov

Andrei Sannikov, born on March eighth, nineteen fifty-four, is a prominent Belarusian diplomat, activist, and politician. In the early 1990s, he played a crucial role as the head of the Belarusian delegation in Nuclear and Conventional Weapons Armament Negotiations, while also serving as a diplomat in Switzerland. His commitment to political integrity led him to resign from his position as Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus between nineteen ninety-five and nineteen ninety-six, a move he made as a form of political protest against the regime.

As a co-founder of the civil action group Charter 97, Sannikov has been a steadfast advocate for democracy and human rights in Belarus. His efforts were recognized in two thousand five when he was awarded the prestigious Bruno Kreisky Prize. Sannikov's political journey took a significant turn when he ran as a candidate in the two thousand ten presidential election, where he garnered the second highest percentage of the popular vote, trailing only the incumbent Alexander Lukashenko.

Following the election, Sannikov was arrested during a peaceful demonstration and faced severe repercussions, including torture and incommunicado detention for two months in a Minsk KGB facility. Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience, highlighting the grave dangers he faced while incarcerated. His wife, the noted journalist Iryna Khalip, expressed concerns for his safety, revealing that he was under pressure from authorities to withdraw from politics.

After enduring sixteen months in prison, Sannikov was released and pardoned by Lukashenko in April two thousand twelve. Since then, he has resided in London, where he was granted political asylum, continuing his advocacy for democracy and human rights from abroad.
